I want to save my virtual instruments on an external hard drive to preserve some space on my hard drive. How can I get Pro Tools to looking into the external hard drive for the virtual instruments?

What virtual instruments are you running? It works different for different ones so list the ones you are using and I'll see if I can help.

I'm pretty sure you can move the libraries onto other HD's but the actual instruments need to be in the Plug-ins folder where they are installed.

You can then navigate to the libraries from within the plug-ins themselves.

Virtual Instruments

These are the ones I want to install.
NI Battery 3.0
NI Absynth
Garritan Personal Orchestra
Spectrasonics Stylus RMX
BFD2

I am thinking of purchasing NI Komplete 5 soon.

Does anyone have any suggest on Virtual Instruments that would be good to have?

What WinterMute said. All those plugins should give you an option on where you want to keep your sound libraries when you first install them. It's a real simple process.
