Pro Tools issue

Just wondering if any knows how to extract MIDI information from a Pro Tools file with out using their crappy program. Their session files preserve the audio in a folder, which is good, but is the MIDI then lost without using their program to export it? Are there free versions to do this? Or can the MIDI be extracted without all the hassle?
