Probably a dumb question about music controls

After about a year of it being in its box, I decided to start wearing my series 1 Apple Watch again and the updates to the OS seem to have taken away a feature I made a lot of use of in the past: quick music controls. If I remember correctly, on the old OS, I could quickly gain access to music controls by simply swiping up (swiping left and right afterward brought up controls and quick access to other apps and watch functions). Is there some way to enable this again or do I really have to press the side button to bring up the dock and scroll to and select Now Playing in order to change a song? Thanks.
