Can you purchase an iPhone without actually activating it with AT&T and just use it as an iPod Touch

You understand the concept of 'money', right?

An iPhone's main cost is associated with all the features that the iPod Touch doesn't have.

I'm not saying that the iPhone in a contract is worth the premium, in fact I don't think it does; but paying it for the use of something that you can get from $200 is just shocking.

Unless you found a phone or stole one, but that is not the case, right?

Hey, guess what!?!
Apple has a device just for people like you. It's for people who want all the features of an iPhone, but don't actually want to use it as a phone or pay a monthly fee....it's called.....drum roll please.....

I believe the OP said it best.....

An IPOD TOUCH!!!!

:D sorry, I couldn't resist. :p

the only reason people wanted to do this earlier was because they wanted an iPod with a speaker

ever since they implemented that to the ipod touch the only thing you get out of an iPhone without data compared to an ipod touch is a camera
not even an amazing camera
in no way should you waste a couple hundred bucks for a 3mp camera

Also the GPS, but my iPhone 3G really sucks, so I keep using a years old Garmin GPS in the car.

The late-2009 Touch (not the 8GB version) has the same processor and setup as the iPhone 3GS. Unless you wait for the new iPhone and iPod Touch, you are much better off with not signing up any contract or not paying the premium for the iPhone, but to get a 16GB iPod Touch.

This is possible only if you want to waste money. If you want only to play music and videos as well as surf the net, then go for iPod touch.

I got a 3Gs and a 3G. I use my 3Gs as my main phone and my gf uses the 3G as an iPod touch. It is not that weird...
