This one has me stumped. Can anyone help?

The internal DVD drive on my MacBook (running 10.5.8) no longer works. So I bought a Samsung SE-SO84 external USB-powered DVD drive, primarily in order to upgrade my MacBook to 10.6. However, when plugged into my MacBook, the Samsung drive won't read my Snow Leopard install disk.

I have established:

- that my new iMac desktop will read the Snow Leopard install DVD fine when I put it in its internal DVD drive (so presumably the disk isn't damaged)

- that my new iMac will read DVDs - including this one - when I plug the Samsung external drive into it (so presumably the drive itself isn't faulty)

- that my MacBook will read my iWork install disk when the new Samsung drive is plugged in (so presumably there's not a general compatibility problem between the MacBook and the Samsung drive)

Basically, when I put the Snow Leopard DVD in the external drive when it's plugged into the MacBook, it tries to spin up, then there's a little mechanical 'click' and it goes quiet for a few seconds, before trying to spin up again. I can't boot from it.

Can anyone suggest anything that might help here? Thanks in advance for any suggestions.

Sam
