problem boot-up

I have a problem with my macbook pro,

when I start it up, the screen does nothing, I can typ in my password and then I hear the start up continue, but then nothing happens, all the buttons (volume up for example) make the normal sounds. Does anybody know what the problem might be? it's not a harddisk failure I hope?
