Problem capturing audio with video on FCE 3.5

The audio is not recorded when I capture the video via firewire on Final Cut Express 3.5. I have checked the system settings to see it should be recording the NTSC signal 48Khz. The clip does not have audio attached and it does not show the audio signal on the clip like it should. I am using a mini-dv tape that is 16bit audio. When I first loaded the software, it did not record audio and I exited the program & then it did fine for several clips until another day of trying to record more clips.
