Hi,
I'm in a quandary with the configuration of my Airport Extreme -
I'll try to explain my situation
I have an ADSL broadband internet connection - the modem (a pathetic Nokia Siemens model) feeds my AEBS through a lan cable and the AEBS provides internet connectivity wirelessly to the 3-4 computers in my house. I had set this up 2-3 years ago while tweaking the AEBS, mostly on a hunch, and the settings clicked and I managed to enjoy my internet connection without a hitch since. However, I recently got myself a mobile-me subscription (there might be those of you who'ld find that asinine! ..
... however, i found some of the features quite good and trouble-less - anyways, that's a totally different topic of discussion). I am presently trying to get the "back to my mac" feature to work through which I can access either my mac/ external hard disks connected to my AEBS from another network through the internet, whenever I'm out of home. So far it's been fruitless -
I'm getting the following error -
"back to my mack isn't working because you may have more than one device on your network providing NAT. Try disabling NAT on one of the devices"
So I did some research and figured that the problem possibly lay in the fact that both my modem as well as AEBS had the NAT feature enabled thereby possibly causing a conflict. Now, long story short - my ISP sucks and the tech. support has no idea of how to ensure internet connectivity by disabling the NAT on my modem. That leaves me with no option by to disable NAT on the AEBS, which I've done but still I have a problem -
Please advise me as to firstly - whether I should keep my AEBS on bridge mode or whether it should share the public IP address? ...
Also, please advise me on what is wrong with these present settings - I'm sure something is not right the way I've set the base station up -
1. my modem can be accessed from 192.168.1.1 which is fine ...
2. now ... my base station - in the TCP/IP page, the IPv4 configuration is put to "manual" and the IP Address has been alloted as 192.168.1.1 while the router address shows 192.168.1.1 which seems kind of strange - I mean ... isn't the modem supposed to have 192.168.1.1? and not the router?
3. next - I have DHCP going on - DHCP beginning address as 172.16.1.1 ending at 172.16.1.10 - I tried allocating the 192.168.1 - 192.168.10 addresses in DHCP, but it don't work - ofcourse I have no clue what DHCP does and why it accepts 172 series but not 192 series ... totally lost there -
4. To further complicate matters, whenever I open airport utility, I get to see the following very confusing details - right at the very first screen - the Airport Extreme IP address is identified as 172.16.1.1! ... but hey, I thought the AEBS would have an ip of 192.168.1.1/ 2 ( i don't know which). If this wasn't enough - I click on the airport base station so that it goes to the details page and i get the following information - gives the version number of firmware, airport id, wireless network name, channel being used, etc... and it says the following too - "connect using ethernet" and "IP ADdress: 192.168.1.2" ....!!!!!!!!!! OH boyyyyyyyyy.... i'm like tearing my hair at this point since it seems to be like a game of ping pong between the 172 series and 192 series and i have no idea what is what!!! ....
5. Network utility program in my macbook pro shows the IP address of my mac as 172.16.1.2.. fair enough ... i think it's taking up values as per how it's been asigned by the DHCP in airport utility ....
but all this has left me totally bamboozled.... I have an inkling feeling that all these multiple ips of the AEBS is somehow ensuring that I can't use "back to my mac" properely.
Would be really really really grateful if someone could shed some light on how to go about configuring my AEBS! ..... I'm totally lost
