Problem Creating Disk Image from DVD

I am trying to make a Disk Image using Disk utility in SL.
I select the mounted data DVD drive then press the new image toolbar button.
I create the disk image read/write and/or compressed. I can open the disk image with finder and run programs from it, but if I attempt to use Disk Utility restore function I get an error about the .DMG file not being a imagescanned . What am I doing wrong?
