Problem installing internet service on older powerbook

I inherited a powerbook 1400c/166 and contacted AT&T (our provider) to add a internet connection to it. I was told it's operating system is too old and they don't support it, they only go back to 10, and mine's OS 9.1. Help, is there anyone out there who can help me please? I was told even their paid support providers don't have info that goes back that far.

I mentioned this problem on another site, and the kind person referred me to this site.
