Problem installing Network printer on Windows XP

I'm trying to install a Brother MFC-5440CN.
It's a USB/Ethernet printer, but I need to connect it using the network port because the software I want to use needs it (Go figure...)
It's connected directly to the computer (no switches or hubs involved)

I installed the drivers, and Windows saw it. The problem comes after the installation. The Brother software says nothing's connected. The Brother network printer administrator sees "something" with the IP, but doesn't recognize what it is. Is there anything else I should do on Windows to make it see the printer?
