Hey, Im running

Mid 2009 Macbook Pro, 15 inch, 2.53 Ghz

I would like to update the system before I try to reformat and clean install a later OSX. When I try to install updates I receive the following error message:

"The update could not be verified. It may have been corrupted or tampered with during downloading. The update will be downloaded and checked again the next time that Software Update runs."

Can anyone help me with this?

Which update is it? You can probably download and install it manually by getting it from the Apple support website. It's more efficient for everyone to provide as many specifics as possible when asking questions.
