Problem opening large photos in preview

Hello All!
I have an odd error with preview. When I try to open a large photo in Preview the image loads, and then as Preview tries to load the higher resolution version a moment later, it overwrites the image with garbled bands. See the screenshot attached. Is this Preview? Or Yosemite? Or my iMac (retina, i7, M295X, 32GB)?
The photo is large - 16836x5686 pixels and 53MB - but it opens ok on my laptop (15" retina MBPro). All the similar sized photos have a similar error.
