So... after applying Microsoft's most recent update to Office 365 (today), the only way I can open files is from the Desktop. This is the message I get - "Word cannot open this document. The document might be in use, the document might not be a valid Word document, or the file name might contain invalid characters (for example,\/)."

Edit: I just realized that I can open files as long as they're in the main Library - username folder...

Oh, I'm running Sierra on a 2013 iMac, but the same thing happens on my 2015 Macbook Pro 15".

Now, understand, this morning I could open everything without difficulty. I didn't change directory names, files, nothing. Sigh. I have no idea if there's a workaround. Has anyone else encountered this?
