Problem Partitioning A Remote Hard Drive

I have a new 1TB Seagate external hard drive. Using Disk Utility I tried 2 times to partition the HD to two 500 GB partitions. Each time at the end it showed "Failure". This partitioning is not a difficult process, therefore, I am stump I have downloaded the recommended paragon driver.
