Problem playing podcasts externally (through car)

iPhone 6+. Toyota Tacoma. For the first few months I had no problems -- Apple's podcast app, plugged phone in to USB port, truck's radio recognized the phone and played the podcasts. Now when I plug it in the radio's screen tells me that there's nothing to play because the iTunes library is empty. Yes, the iTunes library is empty -- I don't use iTunes. But why won't it recognize the podcasts app anymore?
