Problem reinstalling Snow Leopard

When I boot from the SL DVD the apple logo pops up and then e spinning wheel. Then the screen goes almost black and I can barely read the screen! There is text there but it is so dark! What is going on? Has anyone seen this before?

And the brightness buttons don't work from here!
