problem searching web with ipad

I'm running iOS 5.1 on my iPad. Whenever I type more than a couple of words in Safari's search field, the search automatically changes from "Google suggestions" to "On this page". Changing the default search engine doesn't help. In other words, I can't run a web search on an entry more than about ten characters long. Is this normal behavior? Any way to reverse it?
