Problem transferring songs from PC to iPhone

When I connect my iPhone to transfer songs It says the device has either stopped responding or has been disconnected.

What should I do? I tried restarting my computer and phone.

Are you using iTunes to transfer the songs? Also, what format are the songs on your PC? I normally use iTunes and then select the songs to sync to the iPhone/iPod.
