I have been trying to update my Apple Watch 2 for the past few weeks. The current software version is 6.1.3, and the phone software version is 13.4.1. The phone will download the software, go into preparing update, and then a message will pop up and say "An error has occurred, unable to install the update." I have also tried going on the watch itself and doing the software update and the same issue occurs.

I am hoping others have had this issue and can help me figure out what is going wrong.

I’m fairly certain the new watchOS 6.2 updates was having trouble installing for multiple S2 owners. All I can say is hopefully it’s fixed soon, I don’t think there’s anything you’re doing wrong.

I had a Series 1 that would not update. I tried 4 times. i was getting ready for a new watch anyway so I bought a series 5 which I really like. I gave my Series 1 to my grandson and he told me he had it on the charger for two days while he was working on his college work online and it finally updated. Seems like the older series are having this trouble.

I had the exact same issue on my Series 2 as well, despite trying many different ways to force the update to go through, no amount of manual intervention worked for me. What ended up working, in the end, was to turn on "Automatic Updates", within Software Update, and since I charge my watch nightly, it took maybe a night or two before I woke up to the miraculous message that the watch finally updated itself.
