When I try to encrypt it, I get the message:

A GUID partition table partitioning scheme is required.


Anything I can do about this?
 
Yes: erase the drive and reformat with the GUID Partition Table scheme.
 
Ouch can't do, that. Don't have a place to store the stuff on it at the moment
 
You can use other methods, like encrypted disk images (you can create them with Disk Utility) or other encryption software like VeraCrypt.
 
Yeah I guess those would work but rather just have it all done with the same thing. Ill just wait till i get another external and then do it.
