Problem W/ External Monitor on Macbook

So, I just hooked up an external monitor to my macbook, its a 22" dell. I'm noticing that everything looks a little more jagged and is not as smooth as on my normal monitor. Its supposed to be a fairly good monitor and so I would expect that I shouldnt have this problem. Can anyone tell me what the problem might be?

What resolution are you running it at?

Try running the MB in clamshell mode so you can increase the resolution on the external monitor.

I tried clamshell mode. It has no problem powering the 1680x1050, although Dvd's are a little choppy w/ the macbook open, but it doesn't change whether or not I go into clamshell mode. Everything else looks good on the monitor except for the text.
