problem when computer sleeps (I think)

I'm new to OSX and have noticed that if I start a long copy for example, then go to bed, I wake up, (the monitor has gone blank) and when I touch the keyboard, the computer comes back to life and my copy continues. How can I just get the screen to go blank, but the computer to keep working.
