So when i plug my external hard drive into my mac it connects for about 5 seconds then disconnects and doesn't reconnect, its formatted fat32 which is for both windows and mac and when i connect it to windows it works fine

Ok so i figured this out byself if anyone else struggles

Reset your mac and hold cmd R when its starting up disk ulitly then should appear and you should see you device (make sure its plugged in, first aid should be selected and then click repair it should fix this issue and won't wipe any files from the drive

Is your external drive 2.5" or 3.5"?

Did it come with an external power supply block?

If so, have you tried connecting it with the power supply providing power?

I think it might be a 2.5 and it has no power supply slot just the one for the usb

sometimes if it hasn't been plugged in for a while it stays connected longer, please someone help

i think ive fixed it now, for some reason it stays connected with this usb which has two usbs on the end to plug into the mac, but it worked fine on a windows with just a single usb :S

What Mac specs? What OS version? What drive brand? What drive size?

You have a drive enclosure which requires "too much" power to be used with only one Mac USB port.

That's why you have to use the "Y" cable adapter.

It's either that, or use an external power supply block (the drive may have a port for a power block on it).
