Problem with 2 TM backups

I am storing 2 TM backups on one volume. It seems that one has overgrown the other. The first takes up 150gb while the other has no more room available. For the second OSX gives me an error saying there is not enough HD space.

Doesn't it automatically prune older backups as needed for space?

Can I manually remove older backups without messing up TM?
