Problem with Ableton Live & Trackpad

I've been using Ableton Live to do live DJ sets. Everything was fine until today. Suddenly the playback hiccups (cuts out briefly) if I touch the trackpad after leaving it alone for 30 secs or longer.

The only changes I've made to my MacBook lately has been the battery update. Could that have anything to do with this problem?

It's not likely a RAM issue bc I've got 2 GB and besides, this problem wasn't happening even when I had only 512 MB

addendum: I plugged in a USB mouse and the problem does not happen with that. So the problem is definitely related to the trackpad. Any suggestions?
