I have an iMac which had Applecare on it up until the middle of June.

I haven't had to burn a DVD in ages but went to burn one the other day and, long story short, it looks like the superdrive in my Mac is borked. It has been so long since I have needed to use it, it might be dead a while.

Is there any chance of Apple covering this under Applecare as any sort of goodwill gesture?

Oops : title should read problem with superdrive.

If Apple will not cover it, they are extremely cheap to buy an external one these days. You do say that your Applecare expired 6 weeks ago, so it would have to be a really nice gesture for Apple to replace for free. Not unheard of though.
