problem with connecting macbook to an external display

Hi

long time reader first time poster

I have a problem with connecting my 2007 white macbook (2.1) to a monitor via VGA, i am only using a dvi adapter (because i was connecting to my lcd tv via a Dvi to hdmi cable)

but when i bought a DVI to VGA cable to use with my adapter, macbook wont detect the new display, it works with my lcd tv

Do i have to buy the VGA adapter to use it with a monitor ?
