Problem with Desktop/Finder

every now and then my desktop locks up.

I cant select any icons and the only functionality that works is clicking and dragging to make a shaded gray box.

Everything goes back to working order when I relaunch the Finder.

Does anyone know what this problem is and/or have a permanent fix?

What version of OS X do you have? What kind of Mac do you have?

I have a MBP that I purchased in Sept 07. It is running 10.5.6

Have you done the standard "repair permissions" and "reset the PRAM" ?
