In your head.
Disk Utility hangs up when erasing freespace.
In short, it hangs up, I reboot the computer and the disk won't mount.

The first time this happened I couldn't get back into the HD at and didn't have a recent bootable backup. So I erased the HD and reinstalled Tiger, and then moved copies of my files over.

The second time(months later) this happened I looked for a large hidden meta file, and found nothing. Since I had a recent bootable backup, I booted from the spare HD, erased my PowerBooks HD, and cloned back the information.

This last time (today), using Omni DiskSweeper (Though I should have checked the trash) I noticed two large files in the Trash, EFTFile1.sparseimage and a folder labeled EFTFile2, all under a file folder labeled Recovered Files. This was a after deleting 4 gigs of media files, and rebooting the computer. I erased the files and everything is back to normal.

Does DiskUtility crash on erasing freespace for other people?

Any ideas as to what it hanging it up?
