iPod touch Problem with exchange or my iPod?

I recently started having problems with my email on my iPod Touch, i'm using Microsoft Exchange on my university's email. I bought it about 3 months ago refurbished, 2nd gen, 16 gig, and it has the latest firmware. I've been using exchange on it and it's been working absolutely perfect for as long as I've had it and up until about a week ago I keep receiving the error message "Cannot Get Mail - The connection to the server failed." I contacted my school's IT to see if they were performing some kind of maintenance, but they weren't and I was told everything should be working fine. My roommate has an iPhone and his exchange is set up the exact same way mine is, his works normally. Nothing else has been changed on my account, I'm just wondering if something could be wrong with my iPod or is there something I'm just missing with my configuration? I've also tried deleting the mail account and re-adding it in multiple times. Every time I add it, it's verified, but when I launch the mail app, I receive the error message.
