I am trying to network an iBook to another iMac using an Internet connection. Using a direct Ethernet connection, I have no problem connecting the two and sharing files. However, if I try to do this via an Internet connection, it doesn't work. I have the iMac on a DSL connection and the iBook on a dialup account. Since I'll have someone using the iBook wanting to share a few files over the Internet from another location, I'd like to have it working just like I have it over the Ethernet connection, as tested in the office. I have an account/password set up on the iMac that the iBook can sign into. Going to "Connect to Server..." I input afp://<IP address>> belonging to the iMac and it starts to time out. The iMac states the exact IP address to be used for other Macs to share files with via the Internet. With the iBook logged in on the dialup account, I enter the iMac's IP address and no connection is made with it timing out. There are no network filter, virus or firewall programs running (only Apple's firewall allowing personal file sharing). File sharing is set to On on both machines. I made sure AppleTalk is off. The iMac is running 10.2.8 and the iBook 10.3.2. If anyone here may have a possible solution, I will appreciate any suggestions. The OS X reference books make it sound so easy but that doesn't seem to be the case here.
