Problem with Final Cut Express

I've found that if I turn off font smoothing, for some reason my Final Cut Express 2 will not run. I get the error "The application Final Cut Express has unexpectantly quit..." I'm using OS 10.2.8. I hope to find a fix because I really prefer the nice crisp text with no smoothing. I turned smoothing off with this command "defaults write -g AppleAntiAliasingThreshold 128"
