Problem with formatting in Mail app

Sometimes my mail (both received and sent) looks fine. Other times, the formatting has each paragraph on one line. This means some lines can be several screenwidths long. If I copy the email and paste it into TextEdit, it looks as expected, normal margins. But this isn't so convenient. I'd rather just fix the Mail problem.

I've looked in Mail help to see what I could find about formatting, about margins...approximately nothing. The "composing: message format" field (on the Composing page of Prefs) is set to Rich Text.

Suggestions?
