problem with iChat dropping connections to Jabber server

I have a Jabber server on our local LAN that connects fine with iChat if I am outside the LAN, but periodically loses connection to the Jabber server when I am on the local LAN. If I go into the /etc/hosts file and add the local IP address of the Jabber server, it works fine on the LAN. Obviously, it doesn't like going out on onto the Internet and routing back to the local server. The problem is that I can't figure out what is causing this.

Any suggestions?
