when i press the volume up or down key on my laptop, the regular speaker with bars below it is displayed, but a mute symbol (circle with cross through it) is displayed underneath. No volume is being produced. Please help

Have you installed anything recently, this reminds me of a time when I installed a program to record the system sounds (iShowU).

If you have then I would look through that program to see if you can disable the sounds via preferences etc. or perhaps uninstall that program if you no longer need it

or..

These threads has some helpful hints. I can't actually remember what I did to solve it.

I'm having the same issue right now. I read somewhere else to hold down "apple"+"option"+"p"+"r" after the boot-up tone and then let it tone 4 times. This is to reset parameters or something, but it didn't work. I can plug in my JBL speakers for iPod and then I can hear the computer through those. Very confused.
