Problem with mac mail in OS 10.4.11-2.1.3

When I receive an email the sender and subject appears in my mail box as usual,I click on it and nothing happens. It is supposed to open the email. Nothing I have done corrects the problem.If I click on reply it appears as usual & same if I click on forward.I hope someone out there can help me??
