Can you determine where exactly the sound is coming from. Is it from underneath where there might be some play between the bottom cover and the rest of the unibody case? If that is where it is coming from, it could be that the bottom screws need to be tightened somewhat.
Otherwise, to answer your question, no its not normal. At that price point you should expect something close to perfection.
Mine has a few issues/quirks such as a slight vibrating noise from the right speaker, especially when using skype.
Otherwise, the screen is amazing and so is the rest of this jewel.

If I press down on a certain area on top of the palm rest I can reproduce the sound. The area clicks every few seconds during typing.

The screws are proprietary, so I can't fix this myself.

What if you flip your MBP with the underbelly facing up. Can you reproduce the sound when applying pressure in that area?

I haven't tried. I don't think that matters since I won't be using the laptop upside down.

I might as well return this piece of junk laptop, Apple quality control was never up to high standards anyways.

Duh, the purpose was not to make you use the laptop upside down but rather to try determine where the sound might be coming from. Anyways you seem to have made up your mind on how to handle this.

You could take it in to Apple to see if they can re-seat the bottom case and fix the problem.

You reall like the laptop and don't want to return it, and all of the sudden Apple has poor quality control and it's a piece of junk. Huh.

Yes, it does make sense., I like the laptop, and Apple products, so long as I get a working one.

Now whether to exchange this or get a refund? Is this a widespread problem because I have read posts here about other people having a similar issue. There is no point in exchanging it if I will get the same issue twice.

Of course you've read about similar issues. People like to complain, but they usually don't say anything when everything works as it should. So, for every post where someone had an issue, there are hundreds or maybe even thousands of people with no problems.

Duh, I knew that. It doesn't matter if the noise comes from the bottom or not, it won't matter because the noise comes from the top and until we fix the top problem lets not be distracted by trivial things.

Apologies for wasting your time, your highness.

Hey, my post came out wrong, I didn't mean to be rude, I was just in a bad mood this morning since my new laptop was annoying me with all the popping noise.

I will think about exchanging it, or maybe a refund. I am just disappointed in the build quality, Apple could have made this laptop a lot more sturdier and added 0.5lb to the weight and it wouldn't have bothered me. But this issue is not acceptable, especially since it comes on and off when I type a lot.

If it is any consolation, mine doesn't have any of the popping sounds you describe. I would definitely swap it...chances are the replacement won't have this issue and you will end up a happy camper.
