Problem with mail and contacts

I searched and found tons of mail problem posts but haven't seen this one.
Maybe someone can help.
Using mail app with aol mail. Can receive mail fine and send mail fine ONLY when manually typing in the email address, when trying to send to someone from my list of contacts I receive following error
Cannot send mail: The connection to the outgoing server smtp.aol.com failed.
I tried to send to myself and receive the same error. I type in my own email address manually and sends fine...any thoughts?

can someone take a guess??
I am in the process of erasing and resynching all my contacts and am going to test that.

Only thing I can guess is a fresh install dude.

I was hoping that wouldnt be necessary. It takes forever to restore and get it back to how I have it now.
