Problem with mail not being received on my iMac

I have a strange problem, since Sat 9th October I have not received any new emails on my iMac, however they are coming through to my iphone. I have pinged the email server from my iMac, and that comes back OK. All the account settings seem OK. I have also noticed a new symbol in the left hand side bar next to the inbox and other items as it changes from time to time. The symbol is a circle with the sector between 12 o'clock and 1 o'clock filled in.
Any help and advise would be greatly appreciated.

That is not a new symbol. That is the progress indicator for the account. For whatever reason, the account is stuck at about 10% complete. Do this:
Select the Mailbox>Take All Accounts Online menu item.
