Problem with Messages and FaceTime

I have looked for similar problems but couldn't find a thread on this. Messages worked fine for a few days, but now it won't even open. Today I tried to FaceTime a friend from my mac and now that won't open either.
Can anyone help, I can't delete messages because it "is required for Mac OS. Can anyone help. Thanks
