My Inspiron 6000 has recently generated a problem where the speakers are very sentimental, for example if you move the laptop they stop working. I have narrowed the problem down to the headphone/microphone ports as if i give the laptop a firm tap in the area of the ports the speakers sometimes start working again. Also if i plug anything into the microphone port of the laptop 9 times out of 10 the speakers start working fine again. I can also plug headphones into the headphone port and they work. But the moment i unplug the headphones or the cable into the mic port the speakers will stop responding or work up until some movement makes it stop working again.

Windows is not aware anything is wrong and detects my sound card normally.

Sounds like a loose solder joint.

DIY is the way forward...

i may not know a huge amount about computer systems, but i can fix anything with a spot of DIY!
as you found out Matt there is an issue with the connection, i find all you need to fix this problem is a knife and a plastic toothpick.
just shave the toothpick down with the knife then angle the jack to where the sound works and then stick the toothpick into the exposed gap, thus holding the jack in the position. Leaving with the sounds of sweet music...
