Problem with my Intel iMac and Garageband

I'm having a problem with Garageband and my Intel iMac.

Garageband works fine when I use it for the first time. But if I close Garageband, leave my computer for a few hours (not shutting the computer down), and try to open it back up, it gives me an error message about missing MIDI drivers. If I then reboot, everything works fine as usual. Any ideas?

Are you using a Midi device? Like a keyboard or something?

Nope, no keyboard or other instrument of any kind. I'm just using the software instruments included with Garageband.
