Hi,

I've posted this query on the Parallels message boards, but nobody seems to have come up with a reason or resolution over there, so I'm heading to you guys for your thoughts/experiences.

I'm a recent Windows to Mac convert but have retained use of Windows through the Parallels 10 software. My Windows 7 machine works great on my rMBP and I've had no issues with that in the last couple of months that I've been using it. It's a great way of using some dedicated programs that only run on Windows, plus I've always found the Office suite to be a lot better on Windows than Mac due to the more recent updates. However, I recently decided to make a Yosemite virtual machine within the software to allow to me to do some testing with iTunes/iBooks/iPhoto without stuffing up my personal collections. Parallels offers the ability to make an OS X virtual machine using the inbuilt recovery partition, so I assumed this as an 'official' way of making a new OS X without causing any issue to my standard install.

Things seemed to go fine with the install. It booted up into the desktop of my virtual machine, but at the exact same time, on my standard install of OS X, the Messages app started to respond weirdly. It stopped allowing the sending and receiving of SMS's, despite working fine previously and nothing having changed on my iPhone (iOS8.1.3 before you ask!) and even straightforward iMessages to contacts that I am certain are active on iMessage started failing to send. The shading behind the contact's names turned red rather than blue and whenever I attempted to send a message, the red exclamation mark appeared and it would refuse to send the message. Facetime appeared to suffer a similar fate, refusing to send out calls to anyone in my address book, despite working fine prior to the install of the virtual machine.

As nothing else had changed other than the install of the Yosemite virtual machine in Parallels, I can only assume that this install had somehow caused a fault with Messages/Facetime. It's weird that Parallels offers the service of installing from the recovery partition without warning of this problem.

I've raised a case with Apple Care support, but they've not managed to come back to me with a way of resolving the issue as of yet. I first raised this on Thursday, with a follow up call last night and now another scheduled call this coming Tuesday. My previous experiences of support with Apple have always been quite quick and simple, so I've clearly done something incredibly wrong to stump them so much!

I've reinstalled OS X to see if that cures it, which it didn't. I even backed up EVERYTHING I had piece by piece (not with Time Machine, as this would presumably just create the same fault anyway) and completely reformatted the unit and started from scratch again. After countless hours of copying data to external sources and then letting it copy back, I'm still as I was right at the start!

I wondered if anyone else had created a OS X Yosemite virtual machine in Parallels 10 and had a similar problem with their Messages/Facetime accounts? Presumably I can't be the only one that's tried it?
