Problem with Power Mac G4 CD/DVD Drive

I just received a free Power Mac G4 with (I thought) nothing wrong with it. However, every time I insert a disc it doesn't read it. But if I boot the computer up, it detects the disc, but will freeze in the middle of reading it (I've done this with both Cds and DVDs). Can anybody tell me what the problem/solution to this might be?
