Hi, experts. I downloaded a pdf document from an internet archive of old, public-domain books. In Preview, it opened as I expected, and I was able to read several pages of the document. However, after whizzing through the three-hundred and more pages, looking for something, Preview suddenly crashed. I re-opened it (and the document referred to) and looked at a few more pages, when it suddenly crashed again. This kept happening after about fifteen seconds of re-opening. Finally, when I clicked on "re-open", it would not.

I downloaded another pdf-opening app for mac, but, when I browsed for the file to re-open it in this new app, the app said, "Cannot load" or something similar. Yet, Preview will open other pdfs and will stay open with them. I have tried trashing various files from my username Library, but this helped only for a time. I tried opening the document in a different account, and it did work for a time, then it started to crash.

It would seem that the file is corrupted in some way. However, why does it open at all, if that is what caused Preview to crash? I need to consult the original pdf file repeatedly, so I would like to find a way to make it behave as I would like it to. Can anyone offer some advice?

With thanks in hopes of curing this problem,
C.H.

Redownload the pdf document. Then open it export it as pdf. That might solve any corruption issues. If it doesn't you might also try printing the document to pdf.
