Problem with Tables in Pages

For some reason, whenever I try to enter an equal sign on its own in pages, it tries to make me enter an equation, which is what I do not need to do. Is there any way I can make so that I can enter a plain equals sign in a table in pages without being made to enter a formula?

Why would you begin a cell entry with an equal (=) sign? In the event that you have a good reason, then you may format your cells as text.
