Dear all,

Wondering if anyone could help shed light on this problem I'm having?

I am in the USA and have a company iPhone 4 on AT&T. My Dad is in the UK and has a a Samsung Galaxy Ace on the Orange network. Since last week, my Dad is no longer receiving my text messages. However, he *can* receive MMS messages from me. I get his text messages fine, and he gets them from other people in the UK ok. Also, I can text other people in the UK/US.

The only change I have made recently to my AT&T iPhone is upgrading the OS to version 5.1. To check whether that caused the problem, I tried my AT&T SIM card in my personal unlocked iPhone 4 which is still on software version 5.0.1. That didn't work either. (My Dad can get my texts from this personal iPhone which is on an Orange PAYG tariff roaming on the T-mobile network).

I tried to check everything was ok with AT&T, but here's where it gets complicated. I work for a large company and all cell phone queries go through our IT department, I can't contact AT&T directly. My IT contact reckons that I don't have international messaging set up on my phone and my manager needs to authorise me having the International Long Distance Messaging Plan set up. He had no answer as to why it's been working ok in the previous 6 months, why I can still text other folk in the UK and why MMS works but plain texts don't.

My questions are:
  • Do I really need AT&T to throw a switch somewhere in order to be able to send texts to international numbers? Their website isn't terribly clear about this.
  • As it's been working fine up to now and I only have a problem with one number (that I am aware of), is there a more likely culprit? Eg do I need to get my Dad to speak to Orange?

Obviously there are ways round it, but I would like to avoid having to carry two phones around unless I really need to. Luckily I have a great manager who is prepared to pay for the messaging plan for me, but it seems a nuisance just to be able to send a one or two texts a week.

If you're still reading this far, thank you and do you have any ideas?
