For 18 months or so I have been successfully using Time Machine on my MacBook 15 Retina to make backups to a 500GB Lacie portable hard disk, about 250GB in all is used. Nothing else is on the disk.

A couple of days ago backup began, and never completed.

I tried several time, same thing. The disk whirred, and flashed, but never completed the backup. I don't think it actually started it!

I used the disk utility to verify the disk, then repair the disk, and then reconnected the HD to Time Machine, but it still will not function as normal. Just interminable whirring.

Finder can see the drive, and all associated folders and files, so it is readable!

Has anyone any thoughts, or any remedy for this .... or is the hard disk broken?

Thanks for reading.
