Problem with writing direction in Snow Leopard

I'm not sure if anyone with an MBP has encountered this problem but... in iChat under format, the writing direction is defaulted at right to left. Although it does give the option to change it from left to right, it goes right back to the default after every message sent!! ...I'm not sure how to set it as a left to right default.

I'm new to the Mac world, so I'm a little lost... please HELP!
